Artist Biography
Elisabeth Smalt viola
Elisabeth Smalt was born in The Nederlands, and is a freelance chamber
musician based in Amsterdam, playing music of all eras. Since 1996 she
has been a member of the Brussels-based ensemble Oxalys. She also
plays with the Prisma string trio, the Nepomuk Fortepiano Quintet, and
Trio Scordatura. In 2001 she commissioned an exact copy of Harry
Partch's Adapted Viola, and is one of the few musicians to play
Partch's music in this authentic way. Elisabeth is an authority on
issues in the performance practice of microtonal music on bowed
strings, and has given Dutch premières of viola works by Horatiu
Radulescu, James Tenney, Lou Harrison, Frank Denyer, Phill Niblock
and Harry Partch. Recent recordings featuring Elisabeth as viola
soloist have appeared on Mode Records (Christian Wolff's Violist
Pieces and Frank Denyer's Woman, Viola and Crow), Tzadik (Jerry Hunt's
Chimanzzi) and New World Records (James Tenney's Koan). She is
co-director of Amsterdam's KlankKleurFestival, a two-yearly gathering
of chamber musicians and visual artists.
